Kagadi

Residents of Ndaiga Sub- County in Kagadi District are living in fear of contracting deadly diseases caused by drinking unsafe water.

Despite its location on the shores of Lake Albert, Ndaiga is the sub-county with the poorest access to clean water in the entire district.

Despite other sub-counties in Kagadi receiving better access to clean water and social services, Ndaiga has largely been neglected and abandoned.

According to the Water Supply Atlas, Ndaiga currently has only 3% access to safe and clean water.

The sub-county has a population of about 7,523 people, according to the 2024 national population census, yet residents have almost no reliable source of clean water.

Residents say they are forced to use water from Lake Albert even though it is unsafe, because they have no any other alternative.

To access clean water and better healthcare services, the people of Ndaiga must first cross by boat to Ntoroko District. Currently, a jerrycan of clean water costs about 3,000 Ugandan shillings.

Luke Odaga, the Ndaiga Sub-County Lc3 chairperson elect says the disease outbreaks are common in the area, yet healthcare services remain poor. The only health facility available is Ndaiga Health Centre II, and even medical workers do not stay there permanently.

The Kagadi district outgoing Lcv chairman Yosia Ndibwami and his likely successor Elly Guard Tumusiime have explained the plans they have for improving access to clean water and social services in the sub-county.
