Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has officially handed over the management of Bugoma Central Forest Reserve to Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

Nabbanja said the forest reserve has been heavily encroached on by cultivators and charcoal burners, leading to massive destruction of the natural forest cover.

The Prime Minister made the remarks on Saturday during the official handover ceremony of Bugoma Central Forest Reserve, which had previously been managed by the National Forestry Authority under the Ministry of Water and Environment, to UWA under the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities.

The ceremony was held at the Kikuube District Headquarters.

Nabbanja revealed that she was shocked after visiting the forest reserve in Kyangwali Sub- County and discovering that much of the forest had been destroyed by encroachers.

She noted that only the roadside section still appeared forested, while large parts of the reserve had been cleared.

Tom Butime, the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, warned that all encroachers, whether big or small, must vacate the forest reserve now that it is under the management of UWA.

Meanwhile, Francis Kazini appealed to UWA to grant cultivators a grace period to harvest their maize before eviction from the forest reserve.
