Uganda has been unanimously elected to chair the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)’s Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA).

Ambassador Adonia Ayebare will lead SBSTA for a two-year term, succeeding the Netherlands’ Harry Vreuls. This appointment marks a pivotal moment for Uganda’s growing influence in global climate governance.

SBSTA, one of the two permanent subsidiary bodies of the UNFCCC, plays a crucial role in advising the Conference of the Parties (COP), the Kyoto Protocol’s CMP, and the Paris Agreement’s CMA.

Its mandate includes providing timely scientific and technological insights to guide international climate policy.

Key areas of SBSTA’s work involve assessing the impacts of climate change, promoting the transfer of environmentally sound technologies, and improving methodologies for greenhouse gas inventory preparation and review.

The body collaborates with expert organizations like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to link scientific research with policy needs.

This includes addressing vulnerability, adaptation strategies, and advancing the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage.

Amb Ayebare’s leadership comes at a critical time, as developing countries face disproportionate challenges from climate change.

Uganda’s election signals growing recognition of Africa’s role in shaping global climate solutions, particularly in advocating for vulnerable nations.

SBSTA and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) traditionally meet twice a year, often in Bonn, Germany, or during the COP sessions.

With Uganda at the helm, there is hope for strengthened collaboration and innovative approaches to address climate challenges under SBSTA’s multifaceted agenda.
