Health experts have raised alarm over the increasing number of deaths caused by tobacco-related diseases in Uganda, with over 5,000 lives lost annually.
Dr. Julius Birungi, the Medical Superintendent of Kagadi General Hospital, revealed that globally, tobacco-related illnesses claim seven million lives every year out of over one billion smokers.
He urged Ugandans to quit smoking, emphasizing that tobacco has no health benefits but poses severe risks.

Dr. Birungi also highlighted the financial burden on Uganda’s healthcare system, stating that the government spends over 449 billion Ugandan shillings annually on treating tobacco-related diseases—money that could be used for development projects.
He warned that tobacco smokers face a high risk of developing various cancers and other deadly diseases, with most smokers dying prematurely between the ages of 34 and 69.
