President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has launched the construction works of Bunyoro University the first public university in Bunyoro sub-region.
President Museveni notes that move is part of his government’s plan to accord each of the 18 sub-regions in Uganda a public university to ensure education equity for all.
Government has availed an initial 15 billion shillings to kick start the construction of the maiden buildings at the 100 acre piece of land donated to government by Dr Canon Henry Wamani at Buhimba in Kikuube District.
The president has committed to avail additional funds to the university next Financial year as the country starts to generate income from its oil.
The first lady and minister of education and sports Janet Kataha Museven has emphasized that Bunyoro University will be a Science led university intended to skill graduates in competitive professions and confirmed that over 18 teaching programs have been approved for the university by the National council for Higher Education.
The chairperson of Bunyoro Univesity Task Force that is overseeing the realization of the first public university in the area Prof.Samuel Kyamanywa explains that Bunyoro University has been a long waited game changer to improve higher education for learners in the entire sub-region.
He said the commissioning of the university will improve the academic standards in the area.
At the same ceremony, Prime minister Robinah Nabanja has reminded the electorate in Bunyoro Sub-region to appreciate and fully utilize the established government university in the region for our own development.
Nabanja noted that almost demands of people in Bunyoro region have been fully covered by the NRM government citing the mortorable roads, health facilities,oil exploration that has granted them jobs,PDM funds that have enhanced their businesses and now a region’s university among others.
The commissioning ceremony was also graced by vice president Jescar Alupo,Minister of state for Bunyoro affairs Jescar Namuyangu Kacha,Finace minister Matia Kasaija,ICT and national guidance minister Dr.Chris Baryomunsi,Fred byamukama for transport,state minister for public service Mary Mugasa,minister for youth and children affairs Balum Barugahara, Members of parliament, among other dignitaries.
