President Yoweri Museven has commended the progress of the construction works at Hoima international stadium in Hoima city.

Inspecting the progress of the project on Wednesday March,19th 2025, president Museven revealed that government is fast tracking the inter-linkage of all stadiums currently under construction with other sports facilities in their respective regions as the country gears to host the 2027 Africa cup of nations.

President Museven explains that the inception of the NRM government found the country without any internationally recognized stadium which is the reason government is filling this gap with additional facilities to the existing Nambole and Nakivubo stadiums.

Additionally, the president said the increase in the number of schools in the country have increased sports personalities which is informing government interventions to increase sports facilities in the country.

The president further says the government in reference to the international sports guidelines is linking up these facilities with international airports in Hoima, Lira and Gulu respectively.

He adds that government is to discuss on how to stimulate the private sector to establish hotel facilities for accommodation of AFCON and other facilities including hospitals.

In her remarks, the vice president Jescar Alupo highlights how sports has improved Uganda’s international recognition and emphasizes the need for first class facilities currently constructed by government like Hoima international stadium in Hoima city.

Meanwhile, the first lady and minister for education and sports Janet Museven commended the progress of the Hoima international stadium construction works and reveals Uganda’s readiness to host AFCON 2027.

She wished Uganda success as it takes on Mozambique in the 2026 world cup qualifiers on Thursday 20th March,2025.

The construction of the 20,000seater Hoima international stadium started in August,2024 and is expected to be completed in December this year at a cost of 130M US dollars.

The stadium upon completion will also host other indoor sports activities such as Boxing, Basket ball, netball, volleyball, swimming, athletics and a training pitch.
