The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), in partnership with Friends of Chimpanzees, has urged residents of Muhooro Town Council near Katyobona Forest to remain vigilant following the capture of a chimpanzee suspected of attacking residents, killing children, and destroying crops.

Speaking to Paradigm FM Tumwesigye Julius, a Uganda Wildlife Authority officer in Muhooro, said UWA had been closely monitoring the chimpanzee and investigating reports linking it to attacks on local communities.

He confirmed that the animal has been captured and transferred to the Entebbe Zoo, where it is being held under secure confinement.

Tumwesigye, however, cautioned residents to remain alert, warning that other chimpanzees in the area could become aggressive following the removal of the captured animal.

He urged parents to take extra precautions to protect their children as the government works on long-term measures to address human-wildlife conflict, including establishing clear boundaries between human settlements and wildlife habitats.

Meanwhile, Kuteesa Swally Kadoma, the Executive Director of Friends of Chimpanzees, also appealed to residents near forested areas to remain cautious.

He further urged government to provide fair compensation to families affected by wildlife-related losses, including damaged crops, property destruction, and deaths caused by chimpanzee attacks.
