Kagadi
In a contradicting turn of events, the Kagadi RDC Caroline Nanshemeza has announced a seemingly reduced figure of the victims who perished in River Nguse accident in Kagadi district last week.
Initial reports confirmed by authorities then stated that the boat accident which occurred Tuesday last week in Kyaleni cell, Pacwa town Council in Kagadi district had left 30 people dead.
Basing on the figures, president Yoweri Museveni supported with 5M shillings in condolences for each of the life lost totalling to 150M Shs.The fund was delivered by prime minister Robina Nabanja on Friday last week.
After a week-long search operation mounted by marine police and Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), on Tuesday morning, RDC Nanshemeza said the final accident report states that only 29 people were on board, and out of these,12 died and 17 survived.
She says 10 bodies have since been retrieved and accorded decent burials.
Basing on the latest figures, this means that of the 150M shillings that was donated by the president to support the bereaved families in burial arrangements,90M that would compensate the earlier announced 18 lives lost remains undisbursed.
Nanshemeza also dispels rumours that another boat accident had occurred on River Nguse in Burora Sub-County.
The rumour had circulated on Tuesday morning by Burora residents sparking fear among the communities already grieved by the recent tragedy.
The RDC also directed security to start impounding all boats transporting people on River Nguse to Bugoma central forest reserve to engage in illegal activities.
She warned all residents encroaching on Bugoma forest reserve to vacate before they are apprehended.
Nanshemeza also accuses National Forestry Authority (NFA) for failing to enhance enforcements to stop encroachment on the forest.
