Kikuube

More than 400 young people in Kikuube District have successfully completed a digital marketing training aimed at equipping them with skills to sell their products on the global market.

The workshop held on Monday, at St. Paul’s Community Hall Kikuube town council in Kikuube District, was funded by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) in partnership with the United Nations and the Mastercard Foundation.

A total of 450 youth aged between 18 and 35 participated in the training, which focused on empowering them to embrace digital platforms to grow their small business enterprises.

The program promoted inclusivity, bringing together participants from all backgrounds, including males, females, people with disabilities, and refugees. Notably, the majority of attendees were women, highlighting growing female participation in digital entrepreneurship.

Participants were trained on how to market their products using the EzyAgric application, a digital platform designed to connect farmers and traders to wider markets. The training aimed to ensure that youth-owned businesses become more competitive and visible beyond local markets.

Speaking to the media, Tabu Ismail from EzyAgric encouraged the youth to fully embrace digital marketing and utilize smartphones as tools for income generation rather than mere entertainment. He urged participants to extend the knowledge gained by mobilizing fellow youth to adopt digital business practices.

The Chairperson of NRM Kikuube Town Council, Byaruhanga Bonenfence Manson, who also served as a mobiliser, commended the initiative for promoting digital skills among young people. He emphasized that such programs are key in shifting mindsets towards using smartphones for business purposes.

Byaruhanga noted that many people will benefit from the application through buying and selling goods, thereby boosting individual businesses and the local economy. However, he cautioned participants to remain vigilant against fraudsters who may attempt to hack their devices, advising them not to share personal identification numbers (PINs).

He also appreciated the Government of Uganda for advancing technological access, which has made it easier for citizens to access information and digital opportunities.

Meanwhile, some of the participants, including Byaruhanga Edith and Atugonza Flavia, both residents of Kikuube, expressed gratitude for the training. They noted that the workshop had opened their minds to new business opportunities in the digital space and enhanced their ability to reach wider markets.

The participants pledged to apply the knowledge gained to grow their businesses and called upon the government and partners to continue supporting youth-focused empowerment programs.
