Kagadi

The search for people who went missing in River Nguse in Kagadi District after capsizing of their Canoe continues, and the Marine Police have so far recovered over 4 bodies.

After more than 20 people went missing in the waters of River Nguse in Kagadi District, the Marine Police started a search operation for the victims.

It is said that about 35–40 people were on the boat on Tuesday at around 8:00 PM, coming from Bugoma Central Forest Reserve in Kikuube District, which led to the accident.

Some of the survivors including Robert Kasaija and Byaruhanga Tumuhaise  told us they were returning from burning charcoal in Bugoma Forest when the boat became overloaded, the operator failed to control it, and it capsized in the river.

The Kagadi district RDC Caroline Nanshemeza who reached the scene blamed the National Forestry Authority (NFA) for failing to do their duty of protecting the forest, which has led to its destruction.

She says that if people were not going into that forest, the accident might not have happened, and appeals people still in the forest to vacate with immediate effect.

The Kagadi district LCV chairman Yosia Ndibwami says among the people who were on the boat, some came from far areas such as Eastern Uganda, which may make identification difficult.

Because of this, Ndibwami is asking people to be very careful and ensure that new people are registered with local leaders so that in case anything happens, they can be easily identified.

Commissioner of Police Sulaiman Kirungi, the commander of Marine Police in Uganda has confirmed that they have so far recovered 4 bodies, and said the search will continue until all suspected victims are found.
