Kagadi
About 30 borrowers in Kagadi District have petitioned the LC5 Chairperson, Elly Gard Tumusiime, over alleged loan disputes and threats by a moneylender, Ibra Mubangizi, to confiscate their property.
The borrowers, held a closed-door meeting with Tumusiime at his office that lasted approximately four hours.
The borrowers accuse Mubangizi of demanding excessive payments and threatening to take their land despite claims that some of the loans have been substantially repaid.
One of the complainants, Magambo Jackson, the LC2 Chairperson of Kiraba ward in Kagadi Town Council, alleges that his wife borrowed 350,000 shillings in 2022 at an interest rate of 20 per cent, but the lender is now demanding seven million shillings.
Another complainant, Justine, a civil servant with Kagadi Town Council, claims she paid 5.4 million shillings in interest on a loan of 1.5 million shillings, but the lender is still demanding two acres of her land.
The borrowers said their attempts to seek help from local authorities and security agencies have not resolved the disputes.
They have appealed to the district leadership to intervene and protect their property.
In response, Tumusiime pledged to engage the relevant authorities to address the complaints and urged the borrowers to remain calm as efforts to resolve the matter continue.
However, Mubangizi has advised the complainants to seek legal redress through court rather than involving politicians.
