Property worth millions has been reduced to ashes after a fire gutted a business street in Nkondo trading center,Bwanswa Sub-County in Kakumiro district.
The early morning fire that started at around 2am on 13th Feb, 2026 destroyed stalls of chapat,food, restaurants, and the Kanyasi bar building, among others.
One of the affected traders Edward Kagira, the proprietor of Kanyasi bar stated that, property worth 28 million shillings was reduced to ashes.
He appeals for help from government, expressing that his business was the only source of his livelihood and his survival remains in despair.
Other affected traders have also called on leaders for assistance, expressing fears about their ability to provide for their families.
Meanwhile, Tadeo Baguma, the local council three chairperson of Bwanswa Sub County, expressed his sadness over the incident and urged the government to respond quickly to support the affected residents.
He further noted that, this incident will hinder the area’s potential for future development.
By press time, our efforts to get a comment from the Albertine south region police fire brigade were futile and the cause of the inferno was yet to be established.
