The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is facing growing internal turmoil as the Kagadi district vice NRM chairperson Peter Amara announced he will contest as an independent candidate in the 2026 general elections.
He lost the election to incumbent chairman Ndibwami Yosia in the NRM primaries for Kagadi district Local council five seat.
In an interview with Paradigm FM on Wednesday, Amara expressed concern over alleged irregularities in the July NRM primary elections.
He cited cases of violence, intimidation, voter bribery, inflating figures, participation of underage persons in the voting exercise, widespread multiple voting, among other irregularities that marred the electoral exercise.
Amara said that remains a staunch supporter and member of the NRM party despite decision to contest as an independent candidate in the 2026 general elections.
He also rejected the outcome, alleging that students from local schools participated in the voting process.
Amara thanked his supporters for standing firm and lining behind his back on the polling day amidst all intimidations and harassment by the rival camps.
His decision underscores the deepening discontent within the NRM, especially in districts where the primaries were marred by violence, confusion, and alleged manipulation.
