Kikuube

Kikuube District boss, Peter Banura, has died in a road crash along the Hoima–Kagadi road, authorities said.

Banura, who was earlier this year re-elected district chairperson, was knocked dead by a speeding taxi at about 8:00 pm on Saturday in Butiamba Cell, Kikuube Town Council.

The vehicle, a taxi registration number UBQ 853E, was reportedly travelling from Kagadi towards Hoima City.

Police said the driver fled the scene after the crash.

According to eyewitness Ibrahim Kugonza, who was travelling with the deceased, Banura had been returning from his farm with a group of casual labourers.

They had stopped near Bukinda IDP Camp to allow the workers to disembark when the speeding taxi approached.

Banura, a son of NRM historical Maj Gen (Rtd) MatayoKyaligonza, died on the spot alongside three casual workers, according to preliminary reports.

His body was taken to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem as investigations into the incident continue.

Prime Minister RobinahNabbanja says Banura’s death is a huge loss to Kikuube and Uganda at large.

Kikuube Resident District Commissioner Godwin Angalia described the late as a calm and dedicated leader.

Hoima Resident City Commissioner BadruMugabi said Banura had maintained strong relationships across the region, while Buhaguzi Member of Parliament Francis Kazini said he had worked with the chairperson without any conflict.

Banura had just begun his second term after being re-elected in the recent general elections.

Police have launched a manhunt for the driver.
