Kagadi
By Bonny Kyaligonza
Traders in Kagadi town are protesting the directives of the town council authorities stopping them from displaying merchandise on verandas and walkways.
On Monday, authorities conducted an operation targeting street vendors in various areas of the town including those displaying commodities along the roadside and verandas.
Authorities also confiscated several goods during the crackdown. Town council officials said the vendors had occupied gazetted walkways, creating congestion and disorder in the town centre.
But speaking to some traders in Kagadi town on Tuesday, they have protested the directive, saying the window display of commodities outside shops and on walkways attract more customers, and increase sales.
In a bid to restore trade order in the town, authorities also directed all artisan workers to relocate their businesses to the industrial area.
But for Joseph Ayebale the proprietor of Ayebale Auto spares is yet to relocate to the industrial area after almost six years ever since the relocation directive was enforced.
He says the industrial area is not yet developed and remains unconducive for business activities. He cited piles of garbage and poor drainage system in the industrial area and it’s inaccessibility by customers.
Ronald Kusiima another trader along Kagadi market street suggests that the town council authority allows them to display few commodities outside for advertisement purposes.
He also criticizes the town council authorities for failing to engage the traders before enforcements.
The town clerk Kagadi town council John Isingoma, stressed the importance of a clean and orderly town, urging vendors to adhere to the directives.
He maintains that vendors must leave the streets and dispose off their goods to indoor shops, further directing fresh food vendors to relocate to the market.
