The state minister for public service Mary Grace Mugasa has called on Ugandans to take personal responsibility in protecting the environment, warning that continued neglect could worsen natural disasters such as global warming, floods and soil erosion across the country.

She made the remarks on Saturday while addressing Christians at St. Charles Lwanga Kahunde catholic parish in Kyanaisoke Sub-County, Kagadi district.

Minister Mugasa said the government’s efforts to promote environmental conservation would only succeed if citizens actively participated.

Minister Mugasa warned residents against encroaching on wetlands and forest reserves, to carryout farming, lumbering and charcoal burning, saying that such uncontrolled practices will result into disastrous effects.

She called residents to enhance afforestation programs to prevent desertification and its effects likely to happen in the aftermath of the oil mining activities in the Albertine graben.

Minister Mugasa further urged Ugandans to value and protect trees for their vital contribution to human life and the planet.

Minister Mugasa also rallied farmers to plant fruit trees such as jack fruits, guavas and mangoes for both food and conservation benefits. Sheguides that commercial farming should be carried out as well as sparing the environment.
