Sunday Christopher a resident of Kiryanga village in Kiryanga Sub-County and a pork joint attendant was found dead in Kiryanga police cells after his arrest in a suspected mobile phone theft.

Sunday allegedly stole a smartphone from Wakisa Susan, prompting community members to arrest and hand him over to authorities on Wednesday.

 He died on Wednesday night in custody.

Kiryanga village LC1 Chairperson Henry Binemazima confirmed the events.

Fellow suspects reported the incident Thursday morning.

Police from Kagadi Central Police Station retrieved Sunday’s body, and conveyed it to Kagadi Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

The Albertine Police Spokesperson SP Allan Julius Hakiza confirmed the suspect’s death. He said Sunday Christopher (now deceased) was taken to police cells already in critical condition after was rescued from angry mob who had subjected him to heavy assault.

He said Sunday succumbed to his injuries in custody as police were still preparing to take him to the hospital for medication.

SP Hakiza warned the public against mob justice, asking them to always report suspected criminals to police for further management.
