Kagadi

Transporters in Kagadi District have raised concern over the continued increase in fuel prices, saying it is severely affecting their operations and forcing them to increase transport fares.

Speaking to the Kagadi District Boda Boda riders Chairperson, Hamza Ategeka, noted that the steady rise in fuel prices has compelled operators to increase town service fees in order to cope up with the situation.

Ategeka explained that fuel prices have risen significantly, with some fuel stations selling a litre at up to UGX 7,000, while in more remote areas such as Kyaterekera prices have surged to UGX 9,200.

He stressed that the variations depend on the location and accessibility of fuel stations.

Ategeka called upon the government and relevant authorities in the transport sector to urgently intervene and find ways to stabilize and reduce fuel prices, warning that the current trend is putting a heavy burden on both transporters and passengers.

Meanwhile, Musoke Matia Abyola, the chairperson of taxi drivers in Kagadi, urged transporters to maintain professionalism and use respectful language when dealing with customers despite the challenging situation.

Abyola appealed for patience and tolerance among all stakeholders, noting that both drivers and passengers are affected by the high transport costs.

He emphasized the need for cooperation as the country navigates through the fuel price crisis.

The government has warned that fuel pump prices are expected to increase in the coming weeks as rising global oil prices begin to filter into the domestic market.

Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa said the country has recently been consuming fuel procured at earlier, lower prices, but this will soon change as new shipments purchased at higher global rates enter the market.
