Kagadi
Over 1800 livestock have been vaccinated against foot and mouth disease in Nyakarongo and Bwikara Sub-Counties in Kagadi district in a campaign aimed at controlling the spread of the livestock diseases.
The vaccination campaign follows a recent foot and mouth disease outbreak that hit areas of greater Bwikara Sub-County killing hundreds of livestock majorly goats and sheep.
Lawrence Nuwagaba, the veterinary Officer for greater Bwikara Sub-County says the ongoing vaccination exercise targets goats, cattle, pigs and sheep in a new cost sharing policy between government and farmers.
Under the policy, farmers will be required to contribute an annual fee of Shs16,000 for each cow and pig, and Shs8,000 for each goat or sheep. The money will be remitted through Pearl and Housing Finance banks and used to help government procure and stock vaccines and other veterinary drugs.
As part of the requirements, farmers will be expected to first deposit the annual fees on the designated bank accounts before their animals are vaccinated twice every year.
He says the money will help government to procure and stock vaccines and other veterinary drugs.
