The Kagadi district education officials have expressed concern over the growing number of boys dropping out of school, attributing the issue to the limited focus on boy children in various government interventions.
According to the education stakeholders, Many initiatives have been aimed at supporting girls, leaving boys overlooked.
According to Julius Alinda Mpigiza, the inspector of schools in Kagadi district, many children are starting their education at lower levels, but their numbers are declining before completing Primary Seven.
Mpigiza says that the boys have opted to go looking for money, doing different casual work like providing labour at the construction sites, vending bananas, hawking commodities, brick laying, among others at the young age, instead of studying.
He says that boys are forced to become breadwinners for their families, which leads them to abandon their education.
Mpigiza also expressed concern over the low turnout of students reporting for term one, stating that it is vital for the government to take action to improve attendance and educational quality in the region.
